Ventures

Three ventures, one company

Each venture has its own website and its own audience. Nalu Technology is the company behind them, responsible for the engineering and the operations.

Liminal Chess, a hardwood chessboard with a small display set into its frame

wood + code

Limited-run handcrafted objects with electronics, software, and live data inside.

wood + code is the studio side of Nalu Technology. It makes small runs of handcrafted objects that combine woodworking with electronics, software, and live data. The goal is technology that feels like a well-made piece of furniture rather than a gadget: solid hardwood on the outside, careful engineering on the inside.

Liminal Chess board set for a game, seen from the player side

Current

Liminal Chess

A handcrafted wooden smart board for playing live online chess with real pieces. Sensors under the hardwood surface track every move, and the board connects to Lichess directly, so there is no laptop or phone beside the game.

Nalu sculpture, a carved map of the Hawaiian Islands, displayed on lava rock by the shore

Past piece

Nalu

An ambient carved hardwood sculpture that shows live and forecast surf conditions. It sits quietly on a wall or shelf and tells you how the ocean is doing without a screen.

Paddle Manager

Club software for outrigger canoe clubs.

Paddle Manager runs the day-to-day work of an outrigger canoe club in one place: session signups and waitlists, crew building, memberships, online waivers, and a club website that the club edits itself.

It was built alongside Waikoloa Canoe Club on Hawaiʻi Island, which uses it to run its season. Because it was built inside a working club, it follows how clubs already run instead of asking them to change.

Sacred Craft: The Koa Canoe Legacy Project

A living archive of Hawaiʻi's hand-carved koa racing canoes.

Only a small number of hand-carved koa racing canoes remain in Hawaiʻi. The Koa Canoe Legacy Project documents them: the people who carved them, the clubs that race and care for them, and the stories and history each canoe carries.

It is a cultural documentation project, not a commercial product. The aim is to record this knowledge accurately and respectfully, so it is kept and shared for future generations.
